My name is Karla and I have a Bachelor’s degree in Media Communications.I’m originally from Mexico but in 2006 I moved to Singapore and In 2011 I relocated to Vancouver. I’ve worked at the Embassy of Mexico in Singapore and at the Consulate of Mexico in Vancouver; this experience has provided me with the opportunity to interact with a diverse multicultural group.Although I’m not a professional writer, writing has always been a very important part of my life.
The person that I will always remember inspired me is my sister. She is one year younger than me but she taught me that, even when the pain is too big, you can find the strength to keep on going.
My sister is tall and slim and she has the perfect combination of toughness and fragility. What not many people know about her is that when she was 13 years old her best friend committed suicide.
At that time, we were just kids and it was impossible for me to understand the pain my sister was going through. With the death of her friend my sister’s world crumbled, and no one, not her teachers, not her parents or her friends had an explanation for what had just happened. He was just a kid. No one saw it coming and we all felt responsible, but my sister felt it more.
We tried to help her but she was on her own. Even if we tried we could not understand her pain. She would spend all day in her room, alone. My mother tried to reach out, but she couldn’t. It was my sister’s fight and she had to do it on her own. It took her several years, but little by little she came out of the dark, the pain was still there but she was stronger, tougher and at the same time more fragile.
